Welcome to Makers Of Melbourne – the ‘go to’ guide for our technically integrated age.
Makers Of Melbourne has been created to consume and assimilate Melbourne culture. We're male focussed, but not male specific, sorting through the dross to weed out the creative stars, standout events and stylish folk that make this city unique.
MOM aims to embrace all facets of what makes this city a creative hub. Our aim is to inform without condescending – to keep you abreast of what’s going on without regurgitating Press Releases & to seek out this city’s sub cultures to give our readers the inside scoop on what’s REALLY happening with the people who make Melbourne Melbourne.
Paul was photographed in South Melbourne wearing a pair of classic straight cap oxford Connaughts in brown suede from the Men's Main Collection by Crockett & Jones.
Shoemakers of Melbourne is celebrating it's first birthday today. It's been an amazing year and journey through men's fashion, foibles and footwear. We discussed what post we were going to celebrate our anniversary with, you guys have so much fantastic flair going on, but we decided that the essence of shoemakers and the reason we started this was that our 'typical' Melbourne man and the efforts he's making was actually the hero of the day and the very essence of what shoemakers was all about. Not trying too hard, but not trying too little. So we celebrate today with Nick, our quintessential Melbourne man, taking it easy in the summer heat and making a beautiful pair of calfskin toe-punch oxfords look absolutely effortless.
The north side of Melbourne is probably better known for its workshops and local craftsmanship than for high end luxury goods, but a recent addition to Smith Street in Fitzroy might just be bridging that gap. Bringing a little bit of Collins Street (and a lot of London) to the north side, brothers Nick and Chris Schaerf have re-set the footwear bar in Australia with the opening of their footwear boutique Doublemonk (www.doublemonk.com.au). Happy to help us footwear mortals into the 'Aston Martins of footwear', the boys practice what they preach. Co-founder Chris Schaerf in an equisite pair of John Lobb monkstraps.
Chris was a standout at The Big Day Out in bespoke brogues by Melbourne shoemaker Rocco. The iconic Malvern based shoemaker made these for Chris to order.
Ward stood out from your typical Bourke street crowd with his classic preppy look - completed by his Ralph Lauren tailored shirt & a pair of Goodyear welted canvas & leather saddle shoes from iconic American mens retailer Brooks Brothers.
Who would have suspected that on a 37c day someone looking as cool as Gerry would cross our path. Sporting a classic pair of Crockett & Jones Westfields, Gerry has swapped out the laces for a contrasting colour for a more contemporary look.
Michael was spotted in South Melbourne in a nice Summer casual pair of Lacoste Bradfords - an eye-catching hybrid, inspired by the Lacoste golfing heritage.
We nabbed Eugene as he was leaving cult cafe Brother Baba Budan in Little Bourke Street. Combining a pair of classic brown Carminas with a beautifully tailored windowpane suit by Melbourne tailor P. Johnson, Eugene's style is Melbourne Businesswear at its finest.
Biedro was a little bemused when we chased him up Little Collins street to ask for his photo. Displaying effortless European style, Biedro was wearing a well loved pair of chocolate suede Car Shoes. The original Car Shoe design was patented in 1963 and has since become a mens footwear classic. The Car Shoe company were taken over by the Prada Group in 2001 & happily these beautiful loafers with their signature dimpled rubber soles are still handcrafted in Italy.
We are loving this high-end American boot culture that seems to be becoming a staple of our Melbourne men. Maybe it's a more utalitarian version of the Goodyear-welted British boots we loved so much last winter. The highest-quality USA hand-made versions from American bootmaking legends Wolverine and Redwing are obvious favourites, and deservedly so. James pulling it all together very nicely this week.
Leigh's a bloke we see around from time to time, and a great example of how all the good things happening in design and product development lately reach our local men. Leigh is a man passionate about the art and quality of craftsmanship, and through the community that is embracing and supporting tailors, bootmakers and craftsman that are focused on quality rather than quantity, normal (that is to say not fashion-fixated) blokes like Leigh are embracing the return of honest and authentic Australian style.

John is home visiting from London for a wedding & also on a happy coincidence, to see Radiohead on their Australian Tour. We spotted John on his way into Rod Laver arena to watch the band dressed to the nines & sporting a well loved pair of trusty Camper lace-ups.
